Castell de Bairén
Perched on a rocky limestone hill 120 metres above the coast just south of Gandia, the ruined Moorish fortress of Bairén offers the most dramatic panoramic view in the entire Safor comarca — a sweeping arc from the cape of Sant Antoni in the north to the cliffs of Dénia in the south, with the Mediterranean stretching to the horizon. It is free to visit and almost entirely off the tourist trail.
History on the hilltop
Castell de Bairén dates to the Moorish period of Al-Andalus, with records placing a fortification here as early as the 10th century. It was here that James I of Aragon — El Conqueridor — camped before his decisive siege of Dénia in 1244, and the castle changed hands several times before falling into disuse after the Christian reconquest of the region. What remains today are substantial stretches of curtain wall, a partially intact tower and the footprint of the inner keep.
The site has been only partially excavated and retains a wonderfully unmanicured quality — wild rosemary, thyme and esparto grass grow between the stones, and lizards scatter at your feet as you walk the perimeter. There are no barriers or interpretation panels, which means you can stand on the original ramparts and look out exactly as a medieval sentinel would have done.
The hike and the view
The ascent from the car park at the base takes around 25–30 minutes on a well-worn path through pine and scrub. The gradient is moderate but the path is rocky in places, so wear proper footwear rather than flip-flops. The reward at the top is a 360-degree panorama: inland you see the flat huerta of the Safor with the Serra Grossa mountains behind, and seaward the entire curve of Gandia's beach is laid out below you like a map.
Sunset from Bairén is exceptional — the beach and promenade turn amber and the sea goes through a sequence of blues before darkening. Carry water and a torch if you plan to stay for dusk, as the path back is unlit. The castle is also a favourite spot for local trail runners who use the hill for interval training in the cooler months.
