Lac Blanc, Réserve Naturelle des Aiguilles Rouges
Lac Blanc sits at 2,352 metres in the Aiguilles Rouges nature reserve, directly opposite the Mont Blanc massif — and its reflection of the Grandes Jorasses, the Drus and the Aiguille Verte in still morning water is one of the most spectacular sights in the Alps. Remarkably, it remains far quieter than the cable-car crowds across the valley.
The Hike and What You'll Find
The most popular approach starts from the Index cable car above La Flégère (reachable from Les Praz de Chamonix), reducing the ascent to a manageable 1.5-hour walk on a well-marked trail through alpine meadows and granite boulders.
The lake itself is a natural tarn ringed by rust-coloured rock — the 'red needles' that give the reserve its name — and the refuge Lac Blanc (CAF) sits right on its shore, serving hot drinks, soup and simple meals from late June to mid-September.
Golden hour here is extraordinary: arrive in the late afternoon, watch the alpenglow turn Mont Blanc pink and orange, and if you have booked a bunk at the refuge, you will have the entire scene to yourself after day-trippers descend.
Nature Reserve Rules and Wildlife
The Réserve Naturelle des Aiguilles Rouges is a protected zone — dogs must be on leads, camping outside designated areas is prohibited, and picking flowers or disturbing wildlife carries a fine.
The reserve is one of the best places in the Mont Blanc region to spot bouquetin (Alpine ibex) and chamois at close range, particularly in the early morning. Marmots whistle from nearly every rocky slope in summer.
The full Grand Balcon Nord trail connects Lac Blanc to the Flégère and Planpraz lifts, offering a high-level traverse with non-stop Mont Blanc views — one of the finest half-day walks in the Alps.
