Aiguille du Midi, Chamonix
At 3,842 metres, the Aiguille du Midi cable car deposits you on a needle of granite where the Alps stretch in every direction and Mont Blanc fills the entire horizon. On a clear morning the silence up here is absolute — just wind, ice and the world's greatest mountain range laid out at your feet.
The Ride and the Summit
The Télépherique de l'Aiguille du Midi departs from central Chamonix and climbs nearly 2,800 vertical metres in two stages, making it one of the highest vertical ascents by cable car anywhere on earth.
Step out onto the summit terrace and you are level with the snowfields that feed Mont Blanc's glaciers. On the south-facing balcony you can spot the Vallée Blanche, the famous off-piste ski route that descends all the way back to Chamonix.
In summer, the Pas dans le Vide — a glass-floored step-out box cantilevered over a sheer drop — lets you stand, literally, in thin air above the Chamonix valley.
Practical Tips for the Best Experience
Book tickets online at least two days ahead in peak season (July–August and February–March); queues without a reservation can exceed two hours.
Dress for near-Arctic conditions regardless of the valley temperature: even in July the summit hovers around -10 °C with wind chill. Gloves, a hat and a warm layer are non-negotiable.
The first gondola of the day (around 08:00) offers the sharpest light for photography and the fewest crowds on the terrace.
