Vía Verde del Bajo Cinca (Greenway)
Converted from a disused railway line, the Vía Verde del Bajo Cinca threads through some of the most fertile and photogenic river-valley scenery in eastern Aragon. The flat, traffic-free track is equally suited to families on rented bikes, serious cyclists and anyone who simply wants to walk among peach trees in blossom.
The Route and Its Highlights
The greenway runs for around 33 kilometres between Fraga and Mequinenza, hugging the Cinca and later the Segre rivers through a corridor of orchards, poplar groves and occasional wetland pools that attract herons, kingfishers and, in spring, clouds of bee-eaters.
Several old railway bridges have been preserved and restored, offering elevated views over the river channels below. The tunnel near Torrente de Cinca is a cool, atmospheric highlight on a hot summer day — bring a light and enjoy the sudden drop in temperature.
Practical Pleasures
Bikes can be rented in Fraga at a handful of shops near the river; electric bikes are increasingly available, making the full return trip manageable for all fitness levels. The surface is compacted gravel throughout and suitable for standard hybrid tyres.
Small villages along the route — Torrente de Cinca, Velilla de Cinca — have bars where you can stop for a cold Estrella Damm and a bocadillo. The whole route has almost no shade between 12:00 and 17:00 in summer, so start early or late.
