Barrio Bajo (El Barrio Morisco)
Tumbling down the cliff face toward the Cinca, Fraga's Barrio Bajo is a labyrinth of whitewashed alleys, flower-draped balconies and stairways that feel unchanged since the Moorish era. This is the beating heart of old Fraga, and an afternoon spent wandering it is worth more than any guidebook summary.
Architecture of three cultures
The neighbourhood preserves the street plan of the medieval Islamic quarter, with narrow passages designed to channel shade and breeze. Look for the distinctive Mudejar brick detailing on doorways and the occasional horseshoe arch peeking out from behind later plasterwork.
Plaques on several houses mark the homes of notable Fragans, including references to the Moorish, Jewish and Christian communities that coexisted here under the Crown of Aragon. It is a compact open-air history lesson you can walk in under an hour.
River terraces and evening light
At the foot of the barrio, a series of small terraces and riverside paths hug the Cinca, where locals fish for barbel in the late afternoon. The golden-hour light bouncing off the water and up onto the cliff-face buildings is the kind of scene photographers wait all day for.
Several informal bars in the lower streets put tables outside on summer evenings; order a cold Ambar beer and a plate of local olives and watch the swallows wheel above the rooftops as the heat finally lifts.
