Restaurante Casa Periquillo

A Fraga institution since the 1970s, Casa Periquillo on Carrer Major serves the kind of honest, ingredient-driven Aragonese cooking that disappears a little more every year. Regulars pack in at lunchtime for the menú del día, which changes daily and always features produce from the Cinca valley.

What to order

Start with the ensalada de melocotón y jamón — thin slices of Fraga peach layered with Teruel ham and a drizzle of local arbequina olive oil. It sounds simple because it is, and the quality of the ingredients makes it extraordinary during peach season.

For a main, the ternasco de Aragón (milk-fed lamb roasted with garlic and herbs) is the dish the kitchen does best. It arrives crackling-skinned and falling off the bone, served with patatas a lo pobre and a half-carafe of house Somontano red.

The menú del día and wine

The weekday set lunch — two courses, bread, wine and dessert — costs around €13 and represents extraordinary value. The dessert trolley invariably includes a homemade melocotón en almíbar (peach in syrup) that is quietly the best thing on the menu.

The wine list leans heavily on Aragonese DOs: Somontano, Campo de Borja and Cariñena are all represented at fair prices. Ask the owner for a recommendation and he will almost certainly pour you a glass to try before you commit.
