Mercado Municipal de Fraga
Fraga sits at the centre of one of Spain's most productive fruit-growing regions, and its covered municipal market is the place to taste that directly from the hands of the people who grow it. Come on a weekday morning and you will find stalls piled with the famous Fraga peaches, locally pressed olive oil and cured meats from the Pyrenean foothills.
The famous melocotón de Fraga
The melocotón de Fraga — a large, intensely sweet white-fleshed peach — has PGI (Protected Geographical Indication) status and is considered among the finest in Europe. The season runs from late July through September, and during those weeks the market is awash with their heady perfume.
Stallholders are generous with samples; don't be shy about asking to taste before you buy. A kilo costs just a couple of euros and will be the best peach you have eaten. Many vendors also sell peach jam, peach liqueur and dried peach slices to take home as edible souvenirs.
Beyond the fruit stalls
Alongside the peaches you will find local aceitunas arbequina (small, nutty Aragonese olives), longaniza de Aragón (a garlicky fresh sausage), artisan cheeses from nearby Mequinenza, and seasonal vegetables grown in the Cinca irrigated orchards.
The market café at the back serves a no-nonsense working breakfast — café con leche, a fresh bread roll with tomato and olive oil — for under €3. It is the most local table in town and a perfect place to eavesdrop on the morning's gossip.
