Aiguabarreig Cinca-Segre Nature Reserve
Just 8 km south of Fraga, the Aiguabarreig (Catalan for 'confluence of waters') is the point where the Río Cinca flows into the Río Segre, creating one of the most ecologically rich wetland habitats in the entire Ebro basin. It is a birdwatcher's paradise and a strikingly beautiful landscape that most visitors to the region drive straight past.
Wildlife and birdwatching
The riverside gallery forest of white poplars, tamarisks and willows shelters an extraordinary density of breeding birds. In spring and early summer you can expect to find European bee-eaters nesting in the sandy riverbanks, great reed warblers singing from the reeds, black-crowned night herons roosting in the poplars, and — if you are patient and quiet — the flash of a kingfisher over the shallows.
Migratory season (March–May and August–October) brings waders, terns and occasionally rare vagrants pushed off course from the Ebro delta. The ZEPA (Special Protection Area) designation means the habitat is legally protected and the wildlife is correspondingly bold.
Walking the confluence trails
A network of flat, well-signed trails runs through the reserve from the parking area off the N-211 near the hamlet of Menarguens on the Lleida side, or from the Fraga side via a track off the A-1234. The main loop to the actual confluence point is about 5 km return and takes 90 minutes at a relaxed pace.
Dawn is the best time: the mist lifts off the two rivers as the light strengthens, the bird chorus is at full volume, and you are likely to have the trails entirely to yourself. Bring binoculars, insect repellent in summer, and waterproof shoes after rain.
