Praia de Doniños and Lagoa de Doniños
Just 8 kilometres from Ferrol city centre, Doniños is a long, wild Atlantic beach backed by a unique freshwater lagoon — a rare coastal wetland that sits within the Fragas do Eume natural area and attracts migratory birds alongside surfers, swimmers and walkers. It is the kind of place that makes you forget there is a city nearby at all.
The Beach and the Surf
Praia de Doniños stretches for nearly two kilometres of fine dark sand, reliably exposed to Atlantic swells that make it one of the most popular surf beaches in the province of A Coruña. Several surf schools operate here in summer, and the waves are consistent enough for beginners while still offering challenge for more experienced riders on bigger days.
Behind the beach, a narrow strip of dunes and coastal scrub separates the ocean from the lagoon — a transition zone that is botanically rich and visually striking. Walk the wooden boardwalk that skirts the dune system and you move from the sound of crashing surf to the sudden quiet of the lagoon in under five minutes.
The Lagoon and Its Wildlife
Lagoa de Doniños is one of the few remaining coastal freshwater lagoons in Galicia and has protected status as a natural monument. In autumn and winter, it hosts significant numbers of migratory waterfowl — grebes, pochards, coots and occasional rarities blown in from further north. Bring binoculars if you have them; the viewing is genuinely rewarding even for non-birders.
The surrounding heathland and eucalyptus forest offer several marked walking trails of between 3 and 8 kilometres, looping around the lagoon and up to headland viewpoints with views back over the beach and out to the open Atlantic. The trails are well-signed and manageable for anyone with basic fitness.
