Pulpería A Gabeira
A Gabeira, on the Ferrol waterfront, is the kind of no-frills pulpería that travel writers dream about: wooden tables, paper tablecloths, copper pots and pulpo a feira that arrives at the table still sizzling, dusted with smoked paprika and drizzled with the best Galician olive oil. This is the dish that defines the region.
What to order
Pulpo a feira — boiled octopus sliced onto a wooden board, seasoned with coarse sea salt, hot pimentón de la Vera and a generous pour of extra-virgin olive oil — is the non-negotiable order. The octopus should be tender but with just enough resistance; A Gabeira gets this balance right consistently.
Follow it with pimientos de Padrón (small green peppers blistered in oil, one in ten is fiery), a bowl of caldo gallego (the hearty white-bean and greens soup), and whatever fresh fish the kitchen is running that day. Pair everything with a chilled Albariño or the local Ribeiro white.
The atmosphere
The restaurant fills fast on weekend lunchtimes with local families — the surest sign of quality. Booking ahead for Saturday lunch is strongly advised. The interior is rustic and unpretentious; the experience is entirely about the food and the company.
After lunch, the Paseo de la Marina promenade just outside is perfect for a digestive stroll along the inner harbour, watching fishing boats and the occasional naval vessel move through the calm estuary water.
