Fragas do Eume Natural Park (day trip)
Just 30 kilometres south of Ferrol lies one of the most extraordinary ecosystems in Europe: the Fragas do Eume, a temperate Atlantic rainforest of mossy oaks, ancient ferns and lichen-draped river gorges that has survived virtually unchanged since the Tertiary period. It feels genuinely prehistoric.
Walking the gorge
The park's centrepiece is the Río Eume gorge, where a network of waymarked trails threads through cathedral-like forest above a river of startling clarity. The most popular route follows the riverbank from the Ombre car park to the Mosteiro de Caaveiro, a 9th-century monastery perched on a rocky promontory above the confluence of two rivers — a journey of about 8 kilometres return.
The trail is not difficult but the terrain is uneven and can be muddy year-round. Wear proper walking shoes. In spring the forest floor is carpeted with ferns unfurling and the river runs high and loud; in autumn the oaks turn gold and the light through the canopy is extraordinary.
Mosteiro de Caaveiro
The monastery itself, founded in 936 AD by San Rosendo, is partly restored and open to visitors. Its position — on a narrow rocky spur with river drops on three sides — is one of the most dramatic monastic sites in Galicia. The views back down the gorge from the monastery terrace are worth every step of the walk.
Access to the inner gorge and the trail to Caaveiro is restricted in summer (June–September) to protect the ecosystem; a free shuttle bus runs from the park entrance at Ombre. Outside summer, private vehicles can drive further in, but the shuttle is still the more atmospheric option.
