Mercado de Ferrol (Mercado Municipal)
Ferrol's covered municipal market on Calle Rubalcava is the city's edible soul — a loud, fragrant, sociable hall where fishwives in rubber aprons slide razor clams and spider crabs across marble counters every morning. It's the single best place to understand what Galician cooking is really built on.
What to look for
The fish and seafood stalls are the undisputed stars. Percebes (gooseneck barnacles) from the nearby Costa da Morte, nécoras (velvet swimming crabs), and slabs of turbot and hake arrive from the Ferrol fish auction just hours before you see them. Prices are sharp and quality is exceptional.
The vegetable section showcases the Galician kitchen garden: fat Padrón peppers, grelos (turnip tops), enormous heads of garlic and the local Galician potato varieties that make the region's stews so distinctive. In autumn look for wild mushrooms brought in from the inland hills.
How to make the most of it
Go on a Tuesday or Friday morning, when the widest range of produce arrives. Most stalls open from 08:00 and the best seafood sells out by 12:00, so arriving early is not optional.
Several bars around the market perimeter serve the classic Galician market breakfast: a crusty bread roll with local cheese or cured meats, washed down with a small glass of Ribeiro white wine. It's 09:00 and it's completely acceptable — this is Galicia.
