Mercado de Ferrol (Mercado Municipal)

Ferrol's covered municipal market, housed in a sturdy early-20th-century building just off the city centre, is the best single place to understand what Galician cooking is actually built on — stalls piled with percebes (barnacles), nécoras (velvet crabs), enormous slabs of lacón (cured pork shoulder) and more varieties of Galician cheese than you thought existed.

What to Buy and What to Taste

The fish and shellfish section is the undisputed star. Look for the day's catch of fresh merluza (hake), the local favourite, alongside razor clams, mussels from the nearby Rías and, in season, the prized percebes harvested from the wave-battered rocks of the Costa da Morte just down the coast. Prices are honest and the fishmongers are forthright about what arrived that morning.

The meat and charcuterie stalls are equally compelling. Galician beef — from the rubia gallega breed — is some of the finest in Spain, and you will find aged cuts alongside house-made chorizo, blood sausage and the pressed pork that goes into the region's iconic caldo gallego soup. A few stalls also sell Tetilla and San Simón cheeses, both with protected designation of origin status.

The Market as a Social Ritual

Like all good Galician markets, Ferrol's is as much a social institution as a commercial one. Regulars greet stallholders by name, debate the quality of this week's mussels versus last week's, and linger over coffee at the small bar tucked into one corner of the building. Go on a Saturday morning and you will see the market at its most animated.

The market is also a practical resource for self-catering travellers: a bag of clams, a wedge of Tetilla and a bottle of Albariño from a nearby shop is one of the finest and cheapest picnics you can assemble anywhere in northern Spain.
