La Marée
Sitting almost on the quayside, La Marée is the restaurant Fécamp locals send their out-of-town friends to — a no-nonsense seafood brasserie where the fish on your plate was swimming in the Channel that morning. The sole meunière and the seafood platter are benchmarks for the region.
What to Order
The plateau de fruits de mer for two arrives on a bed of crushed ice stacked with Étretat oysters, whelks, shrimp, half a crab and langoustines — order it at least 24 hours ahead if you're visiting in summer.
The daily fish specials are written on a blackboard and change entirely depending on what the boats brought in; the kitchen does nothing clever to the fish, which is exactly the point. Butter, lemon, a little cream — Normandy cooking at its honest best.
Practical Details
The dining room is small and fills quickly at lunch; book a table for 12 h 30 to guarantee a spot with a view of the harbour basin and the colourful fishing boats beyond the window.
The house Muscadet is well-priced and pairs perfectly with the oysters; the calvados served as a digestif is from a local producer and significantly better than the tourist-trap bottles sold elsewhere.
