Nietzsche Path (Chemin de Nietzsche)
Friedrich Nietzsche famously walked the steep mule track between Èze-Village and Èze-sur-Mer while conceiving 'Thus Spoke Zarathustra', and the path named in his honour remains one of the most rewarding hikes on the entire Riviera. The 1.6 km descent through wild Mediterranean scrub rewards you with vertiginous sea views at almost every switchback.
The Hike Down
The trail begins just below the main village gate and drops roughly 400 metres through pine, rosemary, and wild herbs to the beach resort of Èze-sur-Mer. Allow 45–60 minutes downhill at a leisurely pace, stopping at the natural rock ledges that jut out over the coastline for unobstructed views of Cap d'Ail and Monaco's skyline in the distance.
The path is well-marked but rocky and can be slippery after rain — proper walking shoes are essential. Descending is far easier than ascending; most visitors take the train back up from Èze-sur-Mer station (a 6-minute ride to Èze-Gare or onward to Monaco).
What You'll See
Halfway down, a broad natural terrace offers what many photographers consider the finest unobstructed view of the coastline between Nice and Monaco. The deep blue of the Mediterranean contrasts with the rust-red cliffs and the silver-green of the maquis in a way no postcard fully captures.
In spring the hillside is dotted with wild orchids and cistus flowers; in summer the air is thick with thyme and lavender. Either way, the sensory experience of the trail is as memorable as the views themselves.
