Èze-sur-Mer Village & Plage Fossette
While the hilltop village draws the day-trippers, Èze-sur-Mer — the beach settlement 500 metres below — lives at a completely different pace: fishing boats on the shingle, a bakery that sells out of fougasse by 9 am and a pebble beach where Nice families have been spreading their towels for generations.
The Beach and the Water
Plage Fossette is the main public beach at Èze-sur-Mer: free, shingle, and backed by a handful of beach restaurants rather than the manicured private concessions that dominate Antibes or Cannes. The water quality here consistently rates among the cleanest on the Riviera, classified as 'excellent' by EU bathing water standards.
Snorkelling directly off the beach is rewarding — the rocky sections at either end shelter wrasse, sea bream and occasional octopus. Bring your own mask; there's no rental equipment on the beach itself, though Nice is 12 minutes by train if you need to pick up gear first.
Morning Routine: Bakery and Market
The Boulangerie de la Mer on Avenue de la Libération opens at 7 am and produces a socca-style chickpea flatbread alongside standard Provençal breads — buy a loaf warm, walk to the beach and eat it watching the fishing boats return. It's the kind of simple morning that the Riviera does better than almost anywhere.
On Wednesday and Saturday mornings a small producers' market sets up near the train station selling honey from the Alpes-Maritimes hills, tapenade, fresh tomatoes and local cheese — a genuine village market rather than a tourist craft fair. Arrive before 10 am for the best selection.
