Every Saturday morning, the small square in Èze-sur-Mer — the beach resort at the foot of the cliff — fills with a genuinely local Provençal market that draws producers from the surrounding hills rather than souvenir sellers. Arrive before 9 am and you'll find olive farmers, honey producers, fromagers, and flower growers who supply restaurants across the Riviera.
What to Buy
The olive oil from the Alpes-Maritimes hinterland sold here is often cold-pressed and unfiltered — a vivid green-gold that tastes nothing like supermarket varieties. Ask producers for a taste before buying; most are delighted to explain their harvest and pressing methods in a mix of French and enthusiastic gestures.
Local cheeses — particularly fresh chèvre rolled in herbes de Provence and small rounds of tomme from the hills above Sospel — are outstanding. Pick up a wedge, a baguette from the bread stall, and a jar of fig jam and you have the perfect picnic to carry up to the clifftop.
The Atmosphere
Unlike the tourist-facing markets in Nice's Cours Saleya or Monaco's Condamine, this one still operates primarily for locals. You'll hear French, Italian, and the occasional flash of Niçard dialect, and the pace is unhurried — vendors chat, dogs sniff around the stalls, and the smell of fresh socca drifts from a van at the edge of the square.
After shopping, the beach at Èze-sur-Mer is a five-minute walk away — a long stretch of public pebble beach with free access and remarkably clear water, ideal for a post-market swim before the heat of the day builds.
