Sendero del Río Ega — Estella to Irache
The waymarked trail following the Río Ega south from Estella to the Monasterio de Irache is one of the most rewarding short walks in Navarre — a 6-kilometre route through riverside woodland, past medieval watermills and up to a 12th-century Benedictine monastery whose famous wine fountain dispenses free Navarrese red to passing pilgrims. Yes, that's real.
The Walk Itself
The path leaves Estella along the south bank of the Ega through poplar and willow groves that stay cool even in midsummer. The river here runs clear over limestone and you'll share the path with Camino pilgrims, local dog-walkers and occasional herons standing motionless in the shallows.
After roughly 4 kilometres the terrain opens into vineyards belonging to the Bodegas Irache estate, and the monastery complex appears on a low hill ahead — an arrival that feels genuinely cinematic after the green tunnel of the riverside.
The Fuente del Vino at Irache
Built into the monastery wall, the Fuente del Vino has two taps: one for water, one for wine. The Bodegas Irache fills it with local red every morning and pilgrims (and curious walkers) are welcome to fill a small cup free of charge. A webcam monitors the fountain 24 hours a day — yes, really — and has become something of an internet curiosity.
The monastery church itself (Iglesia de Santa María la Real de Irache) is a superb example of transitional Romanesque-Gothic and is open for visits; the cloister is particularly serene in the late afternoon light. The return walk to Estella along the same path takes about 75 minutes at an easy pace.
