Mirador del Castillo de Zalatambor
Climb the steep path above the old town to the ruined ramparts of Zalatambor Castle and you're rewarded with a sweeping 360-degree view over the Ega river valley, the terracotta rooftops of Estella and the rolling green hills of Navarre stretching to the horizon. It costs nothing and the silence up here is extraordinary.
The Climb and the Reward
The castle itself was largely demolished in 1572 on the orders of Philip II, but the rocky outcrop and surviving wall fragments still frame the view perfectly. The path from the old town takes about 20 minutes on foot via Calle de la Rúa — wear decent shoes as the upper section is uneven.
At the top, the panorama takes in the Romanesque churches below, the medieval bridge of La Cárcel and the green patchwork of market gardens along the Ega — a composition that looks like a painted map of medieval Spain.
Golden Hour and Beyond
Sunset from Zalatambor turns the sandstone town below a deep amber and casts long shadows across the valley — local photographers consider this one of the finest evening viewpoints in the whole of Navarre.
In spring the hillside is carpeted with wild flowers and the surrounding scrub buzzes with bee-eaters and hoopoes, making it a quiet birdwatching spot as well as a viewpoint.
