Mercado Semanal de Estella (Tuesday Market)
Every Tuesday morning the Plaza de los Fueros and surrounding streets fill with stalls selling local produce, and this weekly market is where you see Estella as its residents actually live it — farmers from the Ega valley unloading peppers, cheese makers from the Urbasa plateau setting out wheels, and neighbours catching up over a glass of txakoli. It's been running for centuries and feels like it
What to Buy
The market is famous locally for its pimientos del piquillo from Lodosa (just 20 km south), sold roasted and jarred by the families who grow them — a far superior product to anything you'll find in a supermarket. Alongside these you'll find fresh white asparagus in season (April–June), local honey from Urbasa and farmhouse cheeses from the Pyrenean foothills.
Clothing and household goods stalls fill the outer ring, but the food section clustered around the old fountain is the soul of the market. Arrive before 10:00 to beat the crowds and get first pick of the seasonal produce.
Eating and Drinking Around the Market
The bars on Plaza de los Fueros open early on market day and serve pintxos from around 09:00 — a tortilla de patata wedge and a small beer for under €3 is the standard Tuesday breakfast for half the town.
The market wraps up by 14:00, after which the square reverts to its elegant, quiet self — a dramatic contrast to the morning bustle that makes the timing feel almost theatrical.
