Tour Philippe le Bon Rooftop Panorama
Dijon's skyline is defined by its polychrome glazed-tile rooftops — geometric diamonds of ochre, green, black and gold that are the city's most photographed signature. The only way to see them properly is from above, and the 46-metre Tour Philippe le Bon is your ticket up.
The Climb and the Reward
The tower's 316 worn stone steps spiral tightly upward, but the effort is brief and the payoff enormous. At the top, the full sweep of the old city unfolds: the cathedral of Saint-Bénigne, the spire of Notre-Dame de Dijon, the Burgundian plain stretching south toward Beaune, and on very clear winter days, the white cap of Mont Blanc on the horizon.
The polychrome roof of the Hôtel de Vogüé and the Notre-Dame church directly below are the stars of the show — their geometric tile patterns look like a vast mosaic carpet when seen from this height. Bring a wide-angle lens or your phone in panorama mode.
Best Times to Visit
Late afternoon in summer, roughly 17:00–19:00, gives the warmest golden light on the stone and tiles. In autumn the surrounding tree canopy turns amber, adding another layer of colour to the scene.
The tower is managed by the tourist office and access is timed; queues form quickly on Saturday mornings in July and August, so arrive early or book a slot at the tourist office kiosk on Place de la Libération.
