Rue des Forges & the Hôtel Chambellan Courtyard

Dijon's medieval pedestrian spine, Rue des Forges, is lined with some of the finest Gothic and Renaissance merchant houses in France — yet most visitors walk straight past without looking through the doorways. Push open the heavy door at No. 34 and you'll find one of the most extraordinary courtyards in Burgundy.

The Hôtel Chambellan's Secret Garden

The Hôtel Chambellan, built for a wealthy draper in the late 15th century, hides a breathtaking Gothic courtyard behind an unremarkable street door. A spiral staircase rises from the centre of the yard, its stone balustrades carved into a basket of interlacing branches that seem to defy gravity — a virtuoso piece of late Gothic stonework that took a single master mason years to complete.

The courtyard now houses the Dijon tourist office, which means it is freely accessible during office hours. Most tourists queuing at the information desk never glance up at the vaulted gallery above them. You will not make that mistake.

The Wider Rue des Forges

Walk the full length of Rue des Forges slowly, reading the carved stone facades. The Hôtel Aubriot at No. 40 dates to the 13th century; the Maison Milsand at No. 38 is a Renaissance jewel with intricate carved pilasters. The street connects Place François-Rude (with its famous bronze grape-harvester statue) to Place de la Libération, making it the natural axis of any old-town walk.

At Place François-Rude, stop for a coffee at one of the terrace cafés and watch Dijonais life flow past. The square's central fountain and the surrounding half-timbered buildings make it the most lived-in, least touristy square in the old centre.
