Mont Canisy Viewpoint
Rising 110 metres above the coast just south of Deauville, the plateau of Mont Canisy delivers one of the finest panoramas in all of Normandy — a sweeping arc from the Seine estuary and Le Havre's industrial skyline across the Côte Fleurie to the cliffs beyond Honfleur.
The View and the Walk
On clear days you can see the Pont de Normandie bridge spanning the Seine to the east and the long sandy curve of the Côte Fleurie stretching west toward Cabourg — a view that puts Deauville's geography in spectacular context. The plateau is largely undeveloped, which keeps the horizon clean and uncluttered.
A network of marked trails crosses the plateau, the most popular being a 4-kilometre loop from the hamlet of Saint-Arnoult. The walk passes through beech woodland and open meadow before arriving at the edge of the escarpment for the full coastal reveal.
History Beneath Your Feet
Mont Canisy is riddled with German Second World War bunkers and gun emplacements, part of the Atlantic Wall fortifications. Several are accessible and well-preserved, giving the walk an unexpected layer of history alongside the scenery.
A small memorial near the main viewpoint commemorates the Allied liberation of the area in August 1944. Combining the coastal panorama with this wartime context makes the visit feel genuinely moving rather than merely scenic.
