Marché de Deauville (Place du Marché)

Every Tuesday, Friday and Saturday morning, the covered market hall and surrounding streets of Place du Marché fill with the best of Normandy's larder: raw-milk Camembert, salted Isigny butter, Livarot cheese, fresh cider and calvados, and seafood caught hours earlier off the coast.

What to Buy and Taste

The cheese stalls alone justify the trip. Look for wheels of Camembert de Normandie AOP (the raw-milk version, not the supermarket imitation), pungent Livarot tied with its distinctive orange bands, and creamy Pont-l'Évêque — all three produced within an hour's drive of the market.

Seafood vendors sell oysters from the nearby beds at Utah Beach and Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue, plus whelks, langoustines and whole turbots laid on crushed ice. Several stalls will shuck oysters on the spot and hand them to you with a wedge of lemon and rye bread.

Beyond the Food

The Saturday market is the largest and spills beyond the covered hall into the surrounding streets, adding flower sellers, antique linens, artisan ceramics and vintage Norman furniture to the mix. It becomes a genuine community event where locals shop, argue about cheese ripeness and catch up over a glass of cider.

A cluster of crêpe and galette stands near the entrance makes a perfect breakfast stop. Order a galette complète — buckwheat, egg, ham, Comté — and eat it standing at one of the barrel tables while the market hums around you.
