Marché Saint-Pierre
Every Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday morning, the vast square around the covered halles of Saint-Pierre fills with some of the best regional produce in central France. This is where Clermont-Ferrand's chefs, home cooks and curious visitors collide over wheels of Saint-Nectaire, jars of Puy lentils and baskets of Auvergne mushrooms.
What to Buy and Where to Look
The covered hall at the heart of the market is the place to find raw-milk cheeses — look for aged Salers, creamy Cantal entre-deux and the rind-washed Munster-style Gaperon flavoured with garlic and pepper. A good fromagère will let you taste before you buy; just ask.
Outside, seasonal fruit and vegetable stalls fan out across the square. In autumn the mushroom sellers are unmissable: cèpes, girolles and trompettes-de-la-mort piled in wooden crates, still carrying the scent of the Livradois forest.
Eat Before You Leave
Several stalls sell ready-to-eat food: truffade (potato and Cantal cheese melted together) served in paper cones, freshly baked fougasse stuffed with lardons, and socca-style chickpea pancakes from a Provençal vendor who has traded here for over a decade.
The café Le Saint-Pierre on the square's north side opens at 07:00 and is the traditional spot for a grand crème and a croissant while you watch the market wake up. Arrive early on Saturdays — parking fills by 09:00.
