Lac du Guéry & Massif du Sancy Day Trip
An hour's drive south of Clermont-Ferrand, the Lac du Guéry sits at 1,244 metres in a glacially carved bowl flanked by the jagged phonolite peaks of the Roche Tuilière and Roche Sanadoire — two ancient volcanic plugs that look like something from a fantasy novel. The surrounding Massif du Sancy offers some of the most accessible high-altitude walking in the Massif Central.
The Lake and Its Volcanic Sentinels
Lac du Guéry is the highest natural lake in the Massif Central and one of the most photogenic: dark water reflecting the twin volcanic spires, ringed by boggy moorland grazed by Salers cattle in summer. A 45-minute circular trail runs around the lake shore and is suitable for all fitness levels.
The Roche Tuilière and Roche Sanadoire are accessible via a signed 3-hour loop from the lake car park. The path climbs steeply through birch woodland before emerging onto open rock with vertiginous views over the Vallée de la Sioul. No technical equipment needed, but sturdy shoes are essential.
Connecting to the Puy de Sancy
From Lac du Guéry it is a 20-minute drive to Super-Besse or Mont-Dore, the base stations for the Puy de Sancy (1,886 m), the highest point in the Massif Central. A cable car runs to within 15 minutes' walk of the summit, where the panorama on clear days extends to the Alps.
The plateau between the lake and Sancy is prime Nordic skiing territory in winter (December–March) and wildflower meadow walking in June–July, when the high pastures bloom with gentians, orchids and arnica. Pack a picnic — facilities on the plateau are minimal by design.
