Museo della Civiltà del Mare, Cetara
Housed inside the restored 14th-century Torre di Cetara complex, this small but thoughtfully curated museum traces the maritime history of the village from Roman-era tuna fishing through the Arab spice trade to the modern colatura industry. It's the kind of place that gives a destination its depth.
What's Inside
The permanent collection includes original terzigni anchovy-curing pots, antique fishing nets, navigational instruments and archival photographs of the village taken in the early 20th century. Panels in Italian and English explain how the colatura production process evolved over five centuries.
A dedicated room covers the tuna mattanza — the traditional bluefin tuna hunt once practiced along this coast — with harpoons, scale models of the trap nets and evocative black-and-white images of the catch being hauled ashore.
Visiting Practicalities
The museum is small enough to cover in 45–60 minutes, making it a perfect rainy-day option or a midday refuge from the summer heat. The tower itself is the attraction outside: walk the perimeter for views of the harbour and the coast toward Vietri.
