Belvedere above Via Umberto I
While tourists jostle for selfies at the Ravello belvedere and the Positano church steps, Cetara's own clifftop lookout above Via Umberto I sits almost entirely unvisited. From here the entire village spills downhill in one uninterrupted sweep of terracotta rooftops, the dome of Santo Pietro Apostolo church, and a wedge of cobalt sea.
Getting There
Walk uphill from the harbour along Via Umberto I for roughly ten minutes, passing through a tunnel and climbing a series of steep lanes. The informal belvedere is a widened bend in the road with a low stone wall — there's no sign, which is precisely why it's empty.
The walk itself is rewarding: lemon trees overhang the path, locals hang laundry between shuttered windows, and the noise of the sea fades to a murmur. Wear shoes with grip; the lanes are smooth stone and can be slippery.
Best Time to Visit
Come at sunrise for a pink-and-gold light that sets the campanile of Santo Pietro Apostolo glowing. In the late afternoon, the western light catches the coloured facades and the harbour water turns a deep Mediterranean teal — ideal for photography.
In summer (June–August) the view also takes in the small beach below, packed with colourful umbrellas in neat rows, providing a vivid contrast with the wild cliff vegetation around you.
