Parco del Delta del Po (Cervia Sector)
The southern edge of the vast Po Delta Regional Park begins just north of Cervia's salt pans, offering one of the most biodiverse wetland landscapes in Italy within easy cycling distance of the beach. This is where the Adriatic coast stops performing and starts breathing.
Wildlife & Birdwatching
The transition zone between the saline and the freshwater lagoons of the delta creates an exceptional habitat. Between March and October you can spot greater flamingos (a self-sustaining colony has nested here since 1997), black-winged stilts, purple herons, little egrets and, if you're lucky, the shy squacco heron in the reed margins.
The best birdwatching spot accessible from Cervia is the observation hide at Valle Mandriole, roughly 20 km north near Ravenna — a 45-minute cycle along the Adriatic cycle route (Ciclovia Adriatica) or a short drive. Dawn and dusk are the golden hours.
Cycling Into the Delta
The Ciclovia Adriatica (part of the EuroVelo 8 network) runs directly through this landscape on a flat, well-signed path. From Cervia's Darsena you can pedal north through Milano Marittima, past the salt pans, and continue into the delta's mosaic of lagoons, poplar groves and fishing valleys with almost no elevation change.
Pack a picnic and stop at the Capanno Garibaldi near Ravenna — a reconstructed reed hut where Garibaldi hid during his 1849 retreat, now a small museum set in a genuinely wild stretch of delta landscape.
