Cervia's Old Town & Torre San Michele

While most visitors head straight for the beach, Cervia's compact historic centre — a perfectly preserved 17th-century planned town laid out on a strict grid by the Venetians — rewards the curious walker with ochre arcades, a cathedral that punches above its small-town weight, and a belltower you can almost always have entirely to yourself.

The Planned Town & Cathedral

In 1697 the Venetian authorities moved the entire population of old Cervia inland and built a new town from scratch on a geometric grid to improve salt-trade logistics — one of the few intact examples of Venetian urban planning on the Adriatic coast. The central Piazza Garibaldi is the heart: a gracious, arcaded square lined with low palazzi that feel completely unrushed.

The Cattedrale di San Giovanni Battista, consecrated in 1702, holds a venerated 15th-century Madonna del Popolo altarpiece that draws quiet pilgrims year-round. The interior is cool, white and unexpectedly serene after the beach-town bustle outside.

Torre San Michele & the Walls

The squat, square Torre San Michele — part of the original Venetian defensive circuit — stands at the edge of the old town near the canal. It's not always open for climbing, but the external view against the flat delta sky is one of the most quietly photogenic frames in Cervia, especially in the late-afternoon light when the brick goes amber.

Walk the surviving stretch of the old town walls along Via Circonvallazione Interna for a sense of the original fortified perimeter. The scale is modest but the atmosphere is genuinely historic — you'll likely be the only tourist there.
