The View and the Square
The vast terrace is anchored by a bronze copy of Michelangelo's David and ringed by souvenir stalls, but step to the balustrade and all that noise falls away. The sight of Brunelleschi's dome floating above the roofline is genuinely moving, no matter how many times you've seen it in photographs.
To the left you can trace the Arno westward toward Cascine Park itself — on a clear day the Apennine foothills form a hazy blue backdrop that makes the whole city look impossibly cinematic.
Getting There and Beating the Crowds
The classic approach is the scenic staircase path from the Ponte alle Grazie, lined with rose bushes and cypress trees — allow 15 minutes on foot from the Oltrarno. Bus 13 runs from Santa Maria Novella if your legs need a rest.
Come at sunrise for an almost crowd-free experience and soft pink light on the dome, or at sunset when the sky turns amber and the whole square buzzes with a festive, shared sense of wonder.
