Mercato delle Cascine (Tuesday Market)
Every Tuesday morning the eastern end of Cascine Park transforms into one of Tuscany's largest open-air markets, drawing Florentines and savvy visitors alike with hundreds of stalls selling everything from leather goods to seasonal produce. It's raw, colourful and completely unfiltered by tourism.
What the Stalls Sell
Food vendors pile high wild mushrooms, pecorino wheels, fresh pasta, cured meats and lurid mounds of spices — this is where local nonnas do their weekly shop, and prices are a fraction of the central market's tourist-facing stalls.
Clothing and accessories dominate the western half: leather belts, linen shirts, handmade scarves and knock-off sunglasses jostle for space under white canvas awnings that billow in the morning breeze.
How to Get the Most from Your Visit
Arrive before 9 am for the best selection and to watch traders set up — the energy is electric and the light is perfect for photography. By noon stalls start packing down and the good stuff is gone.
Bring cash in small denominations; few vendors accept cards. A canvas tote bag is essential, and a little Italian goes a long way — even a cheerful 'quanto costa?' earns a smile and sometimes a better price.
