Giardino Torrigiani
Behind an unassuming door on Via del Campuccio lies the largest private garden within any European city's historic centre — a romantic, slightly wild neo-Gothic park that has belonged to the Torrigiani family since the 16th century. Almost no tourists find it, which makes the experience feel like a private audience with old Florence.
What's Inside
The garden sprawls over seven hectares of ancient trees, sculptural hedgerows, a limonaia sheltering centuries-old citrus trees, and a neo-Gothic tower built in 1824 that you can climb for rooftop views over the Oltrarno's terracotta sea.
Hidden paths wind past Roman fragments, a small lake, and a botanical collection that includes some of the oldest camellias in Italy. The atmosphere is equal parts faded grandeur and living wilderness.
Visiting and Getting There
Access is by guided tour only, bookable directly through the Torrigiani family's website. Tours run on selected mornings and are kept deliberately small — rarely more than ten people — which preserves the sense of intimate discovery.
The garden sits in the Oltrarno neighbourhood, a short walk from Ponte alla Carraia. Combine it with lunch at a nearby Oltrarno trattoria and a browse through the antique dealers on Via Maggio.
