Warung Bu Mi & the Canggu Café Trail

Canggu's food scene ranges from IDR 25,000 plates of home-cooked Balinese rice to world-class natural wine bars — and the smartest travellers do both on the same day. Start with a warung breakfast, then follow the café trail through Batu Bolong's leafy back streets.

Warung Bu Mi: The Honest Local Plate

Warung Bu Mi is widely regarded as the best-value restaurant in Canggu for authentic Indonesian food. Fresh vegetables, fish, meat, and generous vegan options are laid out buffet-style, and a full plant-based plate costs around 25,000 IDR — roughly USD 1.50. It is the kind of meal that reminds you why Balinese cooking is among the world's great cuisines.

Arrive hungry and point at whatever looks good: jackfruit curry, tempeh in sweet soy, sambal-dressed greens, and fragrant steamed rice. The plastic chairs and fluorescent lighting are part of the charm — this is where Canggu locals actually eat.

The Café Circuit: Crate, Hungry Bird & Mosto

For breakfast and brunch, Crate Cafe on Jalan Padang Linjong oozes urban charm with contemporary brunch dishes, long communal tables, and their own-blend Crate Coffee. Their smoothie bowls are some of the most photographed food in Canggu — justifiably so. Note that tables are first-come, first-served and a short wait is normal at peak hours.

Hungry Bird Cafe, a short scooter ride away, is the consensus pick for the best coffee in Canggu — a verdict reached by travellers who have spent months testing the competition. Affordable breakfast and lunch make it a full-morning destination. For dinner, Mosto in Berawa is a revelation: Indonesia's first natural wine bar, with over 70 low-intervention wines and a small-plates menu that punches far above its price point.

Zai Café: Mediterranean Meets Bali

Located in the heart of Canggu, Zai Café is a contemporary dining spot inspired by the vibrant flavours of the Mediterranean and the Middle East. The boho-chic interior uses earthy colours and natural materials, creating a warm atmosphere that makes it easy to linger over charcoal-grilled meats with tahini dressing and excellent mezze.

It sits comfortably between warung-cheap and beach-club-expensive — the sweet spot that smart Canggu visitors learn to seek out. Reservations are recommended for dinner, especially on weekends.
