Nelayan Beach & Pererenan Neighbourhood
Tucked between Berawa and Batu Bolong, Nelayan Beach is a quietly spectacular strip of black sand where fishing boats rest beside a small temple, kite-surfers arc overhead, and you can buy fresh lobster straight off the boat at dawn — all without fighting for a sunbed.
Nelayan: Canggu's Best-Kept Beach Secret
While Batu Bolong and Echo Beach dominate the Canggu conversation, Nelayan Beach remains a quieter and far less crowded alternative. The beach is calm, flanked by a small Hindu temple and colourful fishing boats, and the graffiti and wall art painted on old fishermen's huts add a spontaneous gallery feel that no beach club could manufacture.
Every early morning, local fishermen bring in fresh fish, lobsters, and prawns that you can buy directly on the sand — an experience that feels genuinely Balinese rather than curated for tourists. Bring a parasol, walk the full length of the black sand, and consider yourself one of the few visitors who found it.
Pererenan: The Neighbourhood Rising Quietly
Just north of Echo Beach, Pererenan is Canggu's quieter, more upscale alternative — an area with a strong community of long-term residents, a growing number of under-the-radar cafes, and a genuinely different energy from the party atmosphere of Batu Bolong. The approach to Pererenan Beach runs through active rice paddies, adding a lush, rural atmosphere to the pre-surf ride.
The surf break here is a punchy reef break suited to intermediate and advanced surfers, offering a left at the river mouth for long cruisy rides and a steeper, faster right that can barrel on the right swell. It works best at mid-tide with a south-to-southwest swell and is cleanest from April to October.
Rice Fields by Scooter: The Essential Canggu Ride
Renting a scooter and threading through Canggu's remaining rice paddies — particularly the lanes between Pererenan and Cemagi — is one of those experiences that reminds you why Bali is unlike anywhere else on earth. The contrast between the emerald terraces and the boutique villas rising among them is striking, and the early-morning light turns the whole landscape gold.
Stop at any roadside warung for a Rp 10,000 kopi tubruk (Balinese black coffee) and watch the farmers work. It is free, it is real, and it is exactly the kind of moment that no itinerary can plan — only a slow scooter ride can find.
