Batu Bolong Beach & Pura Batu Bolong

Canggu's beating heart sits right here: a volcanic black-sand beach flanked by an ancient sea temple where offerings drift in salt-spray and beginner surfers catch their first green wave. Stay until the sky turns tangerine and the temple silhouette goes ink-black against the Indian Ocean.

Catch Your First Balinese Wave

Batu Bolong is the most beginner-friendly surf break in Canggu, producing gentle A-frame waves with a long whitewater section close to shore that is perfect for learning. Surf schools operate directly on the sand with same-day booking available, and instructors are well-practised at guiding complete first-timers to their feet.

For those ready to progress, the channel leads out to longer green waves ideal for intermediates working on turns and wave reading. The break works on most tides but is best at mid-to-high when the reef is well covered, and it is consistent year-round — making it a reliable morning ritual no matter when you visit.

Pura Batu Bolong: The Temple on the Rock

Perched on a rocky outcrop directly beside the beach, Pura Batu Bolong is one of two ancient sea temples in Canggu, both built upon the initiative of the revered Hindu priest Dang Hyang Nirartha. Arriving at dawn or dusk, you may catch local worshippers in white-and-yellow sarongs placing flower offerings while the surf crashes below.

The temple is free to enter with a sarong (available to borrow at the gate) and the stone steps leading down to the water offer one of the best unobstructed sunset viewpoints in the entire Canggu area — no beach club cover charge required.

Fuel Up at The Shady Shack

A five-minute walk from the sand, The Shady Shack is a Canggu staple serving vibrant plant-based dishes in a lush, jungle-garden setting. The menu runs from smoothie bowls stacked with tropical fruit to hearty vegan burgers, and the colourful plating is genuinely Instagrammable.

It is the ideal post-surf refuel: generous portions, fresh juices, and a shaded terrace that feels miles from the scooter chaos of Jalan Batu Bolong just outside.
