Maiden's Cove Tidal Pools
Tucked between Glen Beach and Clifton 4th, Maiden's Cove is the open secret that seasoned Camps Bay residents guard jealously — two natural tidal pools cradled between granite boulders, where the Atlantic is tamed to a calm, swimmable pool with one of the most extraordinary mountain-and-ocean backdrops you will ever swim in.
The Pools
The tidal pools at Maiden's Cove sit within a sheltered cove that feels deliberately hidden despite being only a short walk or drive from the heart of Camps Bay. The water is cold — this is still the Atlantic — but far calmer than the open beach, making it a favourite for families, older swimmers, and anyone who wants to float in peace without fighting waves or currents.
Two pools nestle between the boulders, and the surrounding rocks are perfect for sunbathing. The granite formations create natural windbreaks, so even when the South Easter is howling on the main beach, Maiden's Cove can feel almost still.
The Setting
Table Mountain and the Twelve Apostles rise dramatically behind you while the open Atlantic stretches ahead — it is one of the most photogenic swimming locations in Cape Town, and yet it rarely appears in tourist brochures. The grassy picnic areas and braai spots make it a natural gathering place for local families on summer weekends.
Sunset here is quietly spectacular: the mountain catches the last golden light while the pools reflect the sky. Arrive an hour before sunset with a bottle of wine and a picnic blanket and you will understand why Camps Bay residents consider this their best-kept secret.
Getting There
Maiden's Cove is accessible via Victoria Road heading south from Camps Bay toward Clifton. There is a small parking area directly off the road; it fills quickly on summer weekends so aim to arrive before 10 am or after 4 pm. On foot from the Camps Bay strip, it is a pleasant 15-minute walk along the coastal path past Glen Beach.
The pools are free and open to all. There are no facilities on site, so bring your own food, water, and sunscreen. The rocky entry points require water shoes or careful footwork.
