Camps Bay Beach & the Sunset Strip

Few beaches on earth come with a backdrop as cinematic as Camps Bay's — a long crescent of white sand framed by the jagged Twelve Apostles mountain range on one side and the ink-blue Atlantic on the other. When the sun dips toward the horizon, the entire strip turns gold and the whole of Cape Town seems to pour onto the promenade.

The Beach Itself

Camps Bay Beach stretches generously along the Atlantic Seaboard, its fine white sand soft underfoot and the water a startling shade of turquoise — though be warned, the Benguela Current keeps temperatures bracingly cold even in midsummer. Arrive before 11 am in high season to claim a good spot before the crowds roll in.

The beach is flanked by a palm-lined promenade that doubles as Cape Town's most theatrical catwalk — locals jog, volleyball games break out spontaneously, and families park up on the grass with braai gear and cooler boxes. There are no entry fees, no roped-off sections, just open, democratic sand.

The Sunset Strip

Victoria Road runs the length of the beachfront and is lined with some of the city's most famous restaurants and bars. Café Caprice, open since 1999, is the anchor of the strip — a lively all-day spot known for its artisan cocktails and sidewalk seating with direct ocean views. For something more elevated, Paranga offers front-row terrace tables over the crashing waves with a seafood-forward menu.

The magic hour here is genuinely magical: as the sun slides behind the Atlantic, the Twelve Apostles catch the last amber light, the palms sway, and every table on the strip fills with people nursing sundowners. Book beachfront tables well in advance for summer evenings — this is not a walk-in situation.

Practical Tips for the Strip

The South Easter wind — Cape Town's famous summer gale — can make the open beach uncomfortable in the afternoons; when it picks up, duck into one of the sheltered restaurants or take a short drive to the calmer Clifton beaches around the headland. Keep valuables locked in your car and out of sight when parked on the beachfront.

Parking along Victoria Road fills fast after 10 am on weekends. The paid lots just off the strip are your safest bet; alternatively, Uber or MyCiTi bus from the city centre drops you right at the beachfront.
