Lion's Head Summit Hike

Standing at 669 metres above sea level, Lion's Head is the hike that Cape Town locals use to initiate every visitor — a moderate spiral trail that rewards every step with a new angle of the city, and delivers a jaw-dropping 360-degree panorama at the top. Camps Bay's white sand and Clifton's turquoise bays sparkle directly below you; Robben Island sits in the distance; Table Mountain looms to your

The Trail

Both routes start from the Lion's Head parking area on Signal Hill Road, roughly 10–15 minutes' drive from Camps Bay. The first two-thirds of the 5.5 km round-trip are a gently spiralling gravel path — wide, well-marked, and manageable for most fitness levels. The final section is where it gets interesting: chains, metal staples, and short ladder climbs up the rocky summit cone.

At the fork near the top, you can choose the ladder-and-chain route (shorter, more exposed) or the boulder scramble (longer but less vertiginous). Most hikers go up one way and down the other to experience both — it works perfectly as a loop.

When to Go

Sunrise hikes are the most coveted: start 90 minutes before dawn (around 4:30 am in summer, 6 am in winter), bring a headlamp, and you'll reach the summit just as the horizon blushes pink over the city. The full-moon hike is equally legendary — the trail is lit naturally and the atmosphere is electric with other hikers sharing the moment.

Weekday mornings are noticeably quieter than weekends. Avoid hiking when the mountain is cloud-covered or when the South Easter is gusting strongly — conditions change fast and the exposed summit can be dangerous.

What You'll See

From the summit, the view is a complete rotation of Cape Town's greatest hits: Table Mountain's flat-topped silhouette, the curve of Camps Bay and Clifton's beaches far below, Signal Hill's gentle slopes, the city bowl spreading toward Table Bay, and Robben Island sitting quietly in the distance. It is, by any measure, one of the finest urban viewpoints in the world.

After the hike, reward yourself with breakfast at one of the Camps Bay strip cafés — Bootlegger Coffee Company on Victoria Road opens early and does excellent eggs and single-origin coffee.
