Castello della Dragonara
Jutting out on a rocky headland beside the basilica, the 12th-century Castello della Dragonara offers the finest panorama in Camogli — a sweeping 180-degree view across the Gulf of Paradiso toward Portofino and the open Ligurian Sea. The castle's dramatic silhouette against the blue water is the shot every photographer chases.
History carved in stone
Built in the 12th century to defend the town from Saracen raids, the castle changed hands between Genoa, local nobles and Napoleon's forces before becoming a private residence and later a cultural venue.
Today it hosts temporary art exhibitions and events, so the interior is only accessible during shows — but the external terrace and the rocks below are freely walkable and reward any visit.
The perfect photography perch
Walk around the seaward side of the castle at sunset and you'll find a natural rock ledge where the colourful stacked houses of Camogli cascade down the hillside behind you and the sea stretches to the horizon ahead.
On clear days the silhouette of Portofino promontory is visible to the south-east, and passing ferries, fishing boats and the occasional tall ship complete a scene that feels almost too picturesque to be real.
