Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta
Perched right on the harbour's edge, this candy-striped Baroque basilica is the postcard image of Camogli — its ochre-and-white façade glowing against the Ligurian Sea. Step inside and the gilded interior, dripping with chandeliers and ex-voto offerings from grateful fishermen, tells the town's soul better than any guidebook.
A church built on gratitude
For centuries Camogli's fishermen and merchant sailors dedicated votive offerings to the Madonna here, filling the nave with silver hearts, model ships and painted tablets recording miraculous rescues at sea.
The current Baroque structure dates largely from the 17th and 18th centuries, though a church has stood on this rocky promontory since medieval times. The bell tower is a useful landmark visible from every angle of the harbour.
Best time to visit
Early morning is magical: the low sun catches the striped façade and the piazzetta in front is still quiet, occupied only by elderly locals and the odd fisherman mending nets on the seawall.
The church comes alive during the famous Sagra del Pesce in May, when the square fills with the scent of frying fish and the Madonna is celebrated with fireworks over the water.
