Mercat de Santa Ponça (Weekly Market)
Every Tuesday morning the seafront promenade of Santa Ponça transforms into one of western Mallorca's most authentic weekly markets, where local farmers, artisan cheese-makers and leather craftspeople set up alongside stalls piled high with Mallorcan sobrassada and fresh almonds.
What to Buy and Eat
Head straight for the produce stalls at the market's inland edge: vendors from the Calvià agricultural belt sell tomàtigues de ramellet (the island's prized hanging tomatoes), locally pressed olive oil and pungent Mallorcan capers brined in sea salt — all things supermarkets cannot replicate.
The ready-to-eat section is a revelation: warm cocarrois (spinach-and-raisin pastry turnovers), slices of coca de trampó (Mallorcan flatbread with peppers and tomato) and almond-studded ensaïmades fresh from a Calvià village bakery make for a world-class breakfast on the go.
Beyond the Food
Leather sandal makers (called avarcas artisans) occupy the southern end of the market, hand-stitching the flat Menorcan-style sandals that have become Balearic shorthand for summer style. Prices here are substantially lower than boutiques in Palma.
Arrive by 9 am for the widest selection and the genuine local atmosphere; by 11 am the tourist coaches arrive and the dynamic shifts. The market winds down around 1 pm.
