Rusty's Markets

Open every Friday, Saturday and Sunday since 1975, Rusty's Markets is the beating culinary heart of Cairns — a sprawling, undercover labyrinth of tropical produce stalls, street food vendors and craft sellers that locals have been loyal to for half a century. Come hungry and leave with a bag full of things you can't find anywhere else.

A Sensory Feast of the Tropics

The fresh produce here is grown regionally and often sold by the farmers themselves — expect mountains of mangoes, dragon fruit, durian, sapote and rambutan alongside everyday Queensland staples, all at prices that make supermarket shopping feel absurd.

Beyond fruit and veg, the stalls spill over with handmade Italian pasta, wood-oven bread, local honey, organic cheeses, freshly ground coffee, Indian and Thai street food, and sugar-cane juice pressed to order — the market's multicultural heritage runs deep, rooted in Cairns' historic Chinatown neighbourhood.

How to Make the Most of It

Locals swear by arriving before 7 am on Friday or Saturday for the widest choice and the best of the season's produce — by late afternoon, variety thins but prices drop dramatically (avocados have been known to hit 50 cents each near closing time).

If you want the full story behind the stalls, book the Rusty's Market Foodlovers Tour: a 90-minute guided walk with at least seven food tastings — fresh coconut, gourmet coffee, pastries, arancini, local honey and sugar-cane juice — plus the history of the market and its founders.
