Cairns Aquarium
Sitting one block from the Esplanade on Florence Street, Cairns Aquarium is the only aquarium on Earth whose exhibits are devoted entirely to the aquatic ecosystems of Tropical North Queensland — from the Great Barrier Reef to ancient rainforest rivers. Step inside and the outside world disappears fast.
A World Beneath the Tropics
The aquarium spans three levels and moves visitors through ten distinct ecosystems and more than 70 habitats, housing over 16,000 creatures — sea turtles, sharks, rays, freshwater crocs and kaleidoscopic reef fish all share the same building as you.
The showstopper is the 20-metre underwater viewing tunnel, where sharks and rays glide silently overhead in a 360-degree oceanarium — a moment that stops even the most jaded traveller mid-stride.
Talks, Feeds & Twilight Tours
Daily presentations run throughout the morning and early afternoon — River Monsters at 10:15 am, Life of Sharks & Rays at 11 am, and Denizens of the Deep at 10:30 am — so plan your arrival to catch at least two.
For something truly special, book the Aquarium by Twilight tour (Tuesday to Saturday from A$89): a guided after-hours walk through all ten ecosystems as nocturnal animals stir, optionally paired with a three-course dinner in the aquatic-themed restaurant.
