Cairns Esplanade Lagoon & Boardwalk
The Cairns Esplanade is the city's open-air living room — a 2.5-kilometre promenade along Trinity Inlet where the famous saltwater lagoon, sweeping mountain views and a parade of pelicans and egrets conspire to make you forget you ever had a schedule. Best of all, it costs nothing.
The Famous Lagoon
The centrepiece is the 4,800-square-metre saltwater lagoon, pumped from the inlet and filtered to Australian standards — a safe, lifeguard-supervised alternative to open-water swimming in croc and stinger country, with sandy edges shallow enough for toddlers and open water deep enough for proper laps.
The lagoon is open from early morning until 9 pm every day, completely free, and fully wheelchair accessible with aquatic wheelchairs available on request. Sunset is the magic hour: the water turns gold, the mountains behind Cairns go purple, and the crowd thins just enough to feel like you have it to yourself.
Beyond the Water
The boardwalk itself is suspended over the mudflats, threading past public art installations, free outdoor gym equipment, volleyball courts, a skate park and Muddy's Playground — a free water-play area beloved by families. The seawall at dusk is the best spot in the city to watch thousands of spectacled flying foxes spiral into the sky for their nightly forage.
The promenade ends at Cairns Marina, where all the Great Barrier Reef day-trip boats depart — making the Esplanade a natural start and finish to any day in the city. Cafés, restaurants and bars line the opposite side of the road, most with waterfront views.
