Munro Martin Parklands
A lush, landscaped oasis just a short stroll from the Esplanade, Munro Martin Parklands is Cairns City Centre's most beautiful breathing space — a free public park where towering tropical trees, sculpted gardens and an open-air performance stage make it feel far more like a rainforest clearing than a city park.
A Green Escape in the Heart of the City
The parklands are designed around mature tropical plantings — fig trees, palms and flowering natives that create genuine shade and a sense of enclosure unusual for an urban park. Pathways wind through manicured garden beds and past public art, with plenty of bench seating for a quiet read or a slow lunch from a nearby café.
The park sits adjacent to the Cairns Performing Arts Centre and regularly hosts open-air concerts, community festivals and twilight cinema events, so it's worth checking the local events calendar before you visit — stumbling into a live performance under the tropical canopy is one of Cairns' more memorable free experiences.
Best Time to Visit
Early morning is the most serene time to visit, when the light filters through the canopy and the park belongs almost entirely to dog-walkers, joggers and a remarkable cast of tropical birds. Bring a coffee from one of the Esplanade cafés and take your time.
In the evening during the dry season (May to October), the parklands are a favourite gathering spot for locals before or after dinner — the temperature drops, the fairy lights come on and the city feels genuinely laid-back in a way that the tourist strip sometimes doesn't.
