Nausicaá — Centre National de la Mer

Nausicaá is not a standard aquarium — it is the largest sea-life centre in Europe, home to 58,000 marine animals across two vast themed universes that take a full half-day to explore properly. Sharks, manta rays, penguins, jellyfish and a 10-million-litre open-sea tank make it genuinely unmissable for visitors of any age.

The Open Sea Universe

The centrepiece is a colossal 10,000-cubic-metre tank where sandbar sharks, giant rays and schools of tuna cruise past a floor-to-ceiling panoramic window — one of the largest aquarium windows in the world. The sense of scale is genuinely breathtaking; plan to linger here for at least 20 minutes.

Feeding dives take place twice daily and are narrated in French and English, giving real insight into the ecology of open-ocean species.

The Sustainable Seas Universe

The newer wing focuses on human interaction with the ocean, featuring a Subantarctic island habitat where Macaroni and Gentoo penguins waddle within arm's reach behind glass. The mangrove and coral reef tanks are meticulously recreated and house species rarely seen in European aquariums.

Interactive stations throughout this section let children (and adults) test water salinity, track shipping routes and learn about plastic pollution in an engaging, non-preachy way.

Practical Highlights

Nausicaá sits right on the seafront boulevard, a five-minute walk from the train station, making it the easiest major attraction in the city to reach. A combined ticket with the castle museum saves money if you plan to visit both.

The on-site restaurant serves sustainably sourced fish and has a terrace facing the beach — a good spot for lunch between the two universes.
