Cap Blanc-Nez Clifftop Panorama

Just 20 km north of Boulogne along the D940 coast road, Cap Blanc-Nez is a 134-metre chalk headland that delivers what may be the most cinematic view in northern France: the English coast hanging like a watercolour wash on the horizon, container ships threading the world's busiest shipping lane, and skylarks rising from the cliff-edge turf. On a clear day you can see the Dover cliffs with the nake

The View & the Monument

The obelisk at the summit commemorates the Dover Patrol, the Allied naval force that kept the Channel open during World War One; the inscription is bilingual and the setting — wild grass, chalk stacks and open sea — makes it quietly moving.

From the trig point you look south along the Opal Coast all the way to Boulogne's harbour mouth and north towards Calais; the panorama shifts constantly with the weather, from silver-flat calm to churning grey-green swell.

Walking the GR120

The GR120 coastal footpath passes right over Cap Blanc-Nez and offers a superb 8 km linear walk south to Wissant village, dropping through chalk combes and past WWII bunkers half-swallowed by the turf.

Wissant has a good crêperie (La Sirène) and a wide sandy beach where you can catch the bus back to Calais or arrange a taxi to Boulogne — making this a perfect half-day excursion.

Wildflowers — pyramidal orchids, sea campion, bird's-foot trefoil — bloom across the cliff tops from May to July, turning the walk into an accidental botany lesson.

Practical Access

Drive the D940 from Boulogne through the village of Escalles and follow signs for Cap Blanc-Nez; there is a large free car park at the base with a seasonal snack van selling hot drinks.

The site is managed by the Grand Site des Deux Caps nature reserve and dogs are welcome on leads; the path to the monument is steep but short (about 15 minutes from the car park).
