Cap Blanc-Nez Viewpoint

Just 20 km north of Boulogne on the D940 coastal road, Cap Blanc-Nez is a 134-metre chalk headland that delivers the most dramatic viewpoint on the entire Opal Coast — on a clear day you can see the white cliffs of Dover with the naked eye, a mere 34 km away across the Strait of Dover. The obelisk monument to the Dover Patrol stands sentinel at the summit.

The View and the Walk

The GR120 coastal path runs along the cliff edge here and a short 20-minute walk from the car park at the top of the D244 brings you to the very tip of the cape, where the chalk drops sheer into the Channel and fulmars wheel below your feet.

On busy shipping days you can count dozens of container ships, ferries and tankers queuing through the Strait — the busiest seaway in the world — which gives the panorama an almost cinematic quality.

The Dover Patrol Monument

The tall obelisk at the summit commemorates the British and French naval forces who kept the Channel open during the First World War. It is a surprisingly moving structure in such a wild, windswept setting, and the views from its base in every direction are superb.

A second memorial nearby honours the hovercraft pioneers who crossed the Channel from this point in the 1960s — a quirky piece of transport history most visitors walk straight past.

Getting There and Combining Stops

Cap Blanc-Nez is best combined with Cap Gris-Nez, 12 km further south along the D940, which is greener, lower and home to a working lighthouse. The two capes together make a perfect half-day coastal drive from Boulogne.

There is a small car park at the top of the cape (free) and a seasonal snack van. The nearest village with a restaurant is Escalles, 1 km inland.
