Marché de la Place Dalton
Every Wednesday and Saturday morning, Place Dalton in the Basse-Ville transforms into one of the liveliest outdoor markets in the Pas-de-Calais, with over 100 stalls selling Channel-fresh fish, farmhouse cheeses, andouillette sausages, seasonal vegetables and flowers. This is where Boulonnais locals actually shop, not where they take tourists.
What to Buy
The fish stalls are the undisputed stars: Boulogne is France's largest fresh-fish port, and on market mornings you will find sole, turbot, mackerel, herring and spider crab landed just hours earlier. Fishmongers will gut and fillet to order and pack fish in ice for travelling.
The cheese counter run by a local affineur usually carries Maroilles, Mimolette, Boulette d'Avesnes and a rotating selection of farmhouse bries — ask for a taste before you commit, sellers expect it.
Street Food and Atmosphere
A van near the church end of the square sells freshly fried herring fillets in a bread roll — a classic Boulonnais snack that costs around €3 and tastes extraordinary eaten standing up in the morning air.
The market fills up fast between 9:00 and 11:00; arrive early for the best fish selection and a relaxed browse, or come after 11:30 for end-of-market bargains on produce.
Around the Market
Place Dalton is anchored by the neoclassical Église Saint-Nicolas, whose steps become an impromptu seating area for market-goers eating pastries from the boulangeries on the surrounding streets.
After the market winds down, the café terraces on the square fill up for an early lunch — order moules-frites and a local Bière du Ch'ti for a thoroughly northern French midday.
